to the rant!

Note: For those of you that haven't read any of the Twilight series and you think you might plan to, there be spoilers ahead.

I've just finished the last book (sort of) of the Twilight series and I find myself at a bit of a loss. Was the end of this series a massive, unequivocal disappointment? Hells yes. Am I glad I read it regardless. Yes I am.

Mostly nonsensical hack-writer drivel to follow:

I believe that book four (Breaking Dawn, as it's called) is a very good example why new writers should not aspire to write a series right from the off. Stephanie Meyer very obviously fell in love with her characters and couldn't bring herself to kill them.

The irony in Breaking Dawn's monumental disappointment is that I don't hate it because one of my favorite characters died, or because something devastating happened to them, no. I hate it because nothing happened. There was all this great tension mounting. The Volturi (Italian vampire leaders) were all gathered together prepared to start a colossal battle with the Cullens (the good guys). It could have been epic (though perhaps I give Meyer too much credit for even thinking that). Instead, however, the bad guys changed their minds before the fight erupted, and then all that's left is an empty, sickening happily ever after.

What the hell?

Incredible tension, epic battle...no climax, the end. God dammit.

I honestly believe that if she hadn't managed to write three best-selling books before this, Breaking Dawn would not have been published. Ever. It doesn't deserve to be published. Her agent, her editor(s), her publisher--they suck. They sold the friggin' book--the substandard, poorly put-together, piece of shit that it is--because they knew that no matter what, she'd sell a million copies. Why? Because of the first three books. If I were her, I'd be pissed. Pissed at myself for writing something so disappointing, and pissed at everyone who told me it was a job well done. Fuckers.

End rant.

You realize the series isn't over, right?

Yes, it is. 'Midnight Sun', which got leaked on the internet before it got finished, is just the first book written from Edward's perspective instead of Bella's. The series itself is most definitely over.

Oh, and I just checked her website. She's not going to finish it because she's too bummed out about the leak. But she did make the partial draft available on the website.

I'm not even going to get involved in this. All I know about Twilight is that I get into arguments with my little sister over the whole "vampires shine in direct sunlight" thing. I played a vampire in an RPG once, and trust me. HE DID NOT SPARKLE!
